Back to Latest Stories Factfile: Meet The Family

The Act4Africa Family spreads across continents, encompassing fundraisers, educators, trustees, staff, volunteers - anyone who is rising to the challenge of combatting HIV/AIDs with Act4Africa! Here's a selection of them - there'll be more added in time!

Martin, Founder

Martin and Kath founded Act4Africa after she returned from a trip to Uganda – you can read more about that here. When not being an extremely busy CEO of Act4Africa, he enjoys getting to grips with current affairs, good cinema and Manchester City Football club – in that order! He first travelled to Africa over 30 years ago, and fell in love with the people and the continent. He’s not been able to shake the dust off since. Some interesting facts about Martin - he once arrested Pierce Brosnan in an episode of Remington Steele, was auditioned by Madonna for her last film and directed Michael Ball in his own play whilst at drama school in Guildford!

Kathy Smedley, Founder

As founder, Kathy has been with Act4Africa forever! Outside of her invaluable work at Act4Africa, she enjoys her family and traveling. To relax she likes to swim, walk - preferably in the Lake District or Derbyshire and where there are definitely no cows. In five years she wants to see Act4Africa alive and well and making a difference beyond our wildest dreams!

Patrick, Head of Jinja Base

Patrick is an inspiring leader of the Jinja Team. An AIDS orphan himself, he works tirelessly, taking the team into Prisons, Schools, Villages and Health centres spreading the message of hope and transformation through HIV/AIDS prevention. You can find about more about Patrick by watching this video.

Martha, Jinja Base

Martha is our financial controller at the Jinja base in Uganda. She's worked for Act4Africa since 2002. She says the work of Act4Africa is so importnat, because the youth are so vulnerable - and we see lives transformed! You can find out more about what Martha says by watching this video.

Chris Grieves, Trustee

Chris is one of our Trustees, and has spear-headed the development of this website. he also has been involved from the beginning - he was the first person to sign up for the very first trip to Uganda. Apart from being a trustee for us, the most fun he's ever had has been whilst stilt walking in Africa and in night clubs in Manchester... He's visited Africa twice and loved it - especially the people, and the sense of an open heaven and the absense of Western materialism. In the coming years he has a dream of paragliding on a sunny day in Devon...

Shaun Murphy, Trustee

Shaun is one of our 5 trustees. He too has been involved since Act4Africa's inception in 2000. He writes "I have been to different countries in Africa many times and always found the experience to be exhilarating, uplifting, joyous and a great blessing. Every time the people show me so much of and about God‚ love for us and the joy this brings".

Shaun Murphy, Trustee

David has also been involved with Act4Africa since the early days. As a trustee he's kept busy ensuring all the requirements of being a charity are fulfilled. Outside of that, his passions lie with his family, the environment – the quality of the local urban fabric as well as Planet Earth, his local community and political action. But he has the most fun when his sailing in extreme conditions, or water skiing, although as the years pass he becomes more prone to injury!
