Forthcoming Trips

Uganda – 14-28 January 2017

Hannah and Dora UgandaAct4Africa co-founder Kathy Smedley’s legacy is about to become reality with the construction of a ground breaking education and community centre in Mayuge, Eastern Uganda.  First fix construction of Kathy’s Centre is due to be completed in December 2016.  We are currently looking for skilled and unskilled volunteers to help complete the second fix of internal fixtures and fittings and external groundwork required to bring this vision to completion.  All help is needed as there will be many tasks to complete.

The team will be involved in practical tasks on the new health and education centre as well as community based activities.  This will include visits to some of the women’s savings and enterprise groups set up by Act4Africa as part of the HEAL project, visits to local communities to meet the people likely to benefit from the centre and spending time with AIDS orphans in the area.

We will be staying in Mayuge in the heart of rural Africa, not far from the town of Jinja: rich in history and set on the shore of Lake Victoria at the source of the River Nile. There will be plenty of opportunity to mix with the local community and get an amazing insight into a totally different way of living.

There will also be the chance for excursions such as a boat cruise on Lake Victoria; white water rafting on the River Nile or for those wishing to extend their trip, a visit to one of Uganda’s national parks to see some big game (additional costs apply).

Price: £995 (excluding flights)

This includes:

  • all internal transport
  • accommodation
  • food
  • visas
  • full insurances
  • orientation event
    * Please note, flights are not included.

India – April 2017

Soapbox Trips is partnering with Life Associations for this trip to help their work amongst the poor, far away from the tourist areas normally visited by westerners.  Since 1993 Life Association has been building schools and children’s homes in some of the poorest parts of India.  The trip will include a visit to Mumbai, home to the Dharavi slum, one of Asia’s largest, where Life Association works with Dalit potters who make the beautiful clay candle pots that the charity sells to support its work.  You will also meet some of the children who they support.

India off to schoolYou will then fly east to a beautiful rural village near Gannavaram, in Andhra Pradesh, where Life Associations has a school and orphanage.  Here you will experience the simple life of the Dalit people and the very real contrast of the rural poor that make up 80 per cent of India’s population and that make a living from the land. You will live in and be involved in the day to day activities of the school and orphanage, helping the children with reading, craft, games, etc.  In addition, the team will be involved with the maintenance of the building and other DIY jobs.  In this way you will be helping Life Association with its support of local pastors and churches.

During your time in Gannavaram you may visit the fishing village of Machilipatnam on the Bay of Bengal where Life Association has opened a school in a Dalit colony.  There may also be opportunities to visit other local churches working among the Dalits.

Price: £995 (excluding flights)

This includes:

  • all internal transport
  • accommodation
  • food
  • full insurances
  • orientation event
  • sightseeing
    * Please note, flights are not included.
