Medical Electives 2012 - changing lives, bringing hope

Act4Africa offer general clinical opportunities or unique clinical experience in Uganda

NOTE: All start dates and duration are by personal arrangement and electives can be "tailor made" to suit your own medical interests or speciality

The practice of medicine in foreign countries is starkly different to that in the UK.

In poorer countries, medical care is expensive and often patients can't afford treatments. As well as gaining experience in the medical field you wouldn't have been able to see at home, you will also gain experience of how doctors in Uganda work given the daily challenges they face. Very poor resources mean different, often innovative approaches are taken. For example, the prescribing of drugs is a major problem for doctors when dealing with the very poor. A patient prescribed a course of antibiotics can, in many cases, only afford to purchase a small number of pills and the chances of them completing a full course are very slim. Despite the lack of resources the medical staff are able perform and provide extensive services, extending their personal & professional skill-set.

The Elective Placements

Our elective placements in Uganda are based at the either Jinja or Kasese and we offer you the choice of either location. Kasese is in western Uganda - the heart of untamed rural Africa whilst Jinja is on the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in the world – but both locations offer you experience of work in a busy general hospital.

The hospitals act as a referral centres to other health facilities in the Regions. There is greater attendance during the rainy season (January to April) due to the increased incidence of Malaria, Cholera and Pneumonia. The common conditions which are seen at the hospital include communicable diseases mainly TB, Malaria, Anaemia, HIV and non-communicable diseases mainly Diabetes and Hypertension. This is in addition to casualties where fractures are the most common cause of attendance.
Standard hours that the medical students will be able to spend in the hospital will be Monday to Friday, 8am until 3pm. However these are flexible and likely to be varied due to the nature of the placements.

The hospitals provide in-patient and out-patient care in the following fields:

• Surgery
• Dental
• Radiography
• Maternity and Paediatrics
• Ophthalmology
• HIV/AIDS counselling
• Tuberculosis and Malaria testing and treatment
• Diagnostic laboratory

The Fundraising Target (set for 2012) for up to FOUR weeks elective in Uganda is £775 (not including airfares).
