- Early marriage;
- reduced access to education;
- less access to formal financial institutions and saving mechanisms than men;
- limited earning potential due to the work considered appropriate for them;
- an increased likelihood of working in less productive or profitable sectors, in low-wage or unpaid family employment, or in the informal wage sector
- sexual and domestic violence;
- life-long poverty and a lack of opportunities, heightening the risk of women turning to sex work or harmful relationships;
- the inability to negotiate safe sex, leading to increased infection risks and unwanted pregnancy;
- HIV infection through rape and abuse;
- high-rates of teenage pregnancy, leading to unsafe abortions or increased maternal and foetal risks;
- homelessness when widowed or diagnosed with HIV; and
- an inability to obtain appropriate medical treatment;
